My Experience at the 2019 NABJ Convention
Happy Hump Day! Today's Wednesday, August 14th and we're just three days removed from the National Association of Black Journalists Convention. This years convention was held in Miami and it was everything that I expected and more! For five days black journalists from around the nation were able to commune, network and build on their journalistic abilities.
I've been going to the NABJ convention since I was a junior in college and this was my first year going since I graduated. Over the years I've enjoyed attending the breakout sessions, exclusive events, and receptions, but this year was different for me. I was on a mission to start my career. I spent the majority of my time at the career fair.
While there I visited almost all of the tables that had anything to do with broadcasting and entertainment. I had the opportunity to sit down with people from companies like Spectrum, Nexstar and Scripps. All of which, are television stations. This was a great experience because I was able to get feedback on my resume, my reel and general advice. I also received a potential job offer! This is one of my favorite things at the convention. The employers come to NABJ seeking out talent. That means there's an opportunity that you could land a job, internship, fellowship or even a new contact.
There are also opportunities to network outside of the career fair. Everywhere I went, I connected with people in the industry. We were able to share our experiences, give and receive advice and build each other. One of the best things about coming to this conference is that I always leave feeling refreshed and motivated. I think that attending this convention and other professional conferences in your field is a great investment. If you weren't able to go this year, there's always next year! Be on the lookout for details on the 2020 NABJ Convention... It's in the one and only Chocolate City!
